If your home is set up with a sprinkler system, then you want to learn about some of the different problems that the sprinkler system can end up having. Once you are made aware of the problems they can have, then you will be able to spot troubles quickly and have them taken care of right away. Here are some of those sprinkler system issues you want to keep an eye out for and other things that you should know regarding the sprinklers.

Learn how the sprinkler system works

It's important to understand the inner workings of your sprinkler system.  There is a control valve box and the controller for the system will send a signal to the controls in that box. This causes the valves to open which allows the water to sail through the water line. The water going through the line make the heads of the sprinklers to pop up out of the ground and then the water will spray from the sprinkler heads. When the system is off or on stand-by, the sprinkler heads will go back down. Not only does this prevent you from having tall sprinklers protruding from the grass, which would be a bit of an eyesore, but the sprinklers going down also helps to prevent them from getting damaged. Some things that would be able to damage the sprinkler heads if they stayed up include your lawn mower, people tripping over them, or something driving over them, such as cars, bikes, or even kids ride-on toys.

A sprinkler head can stop coming up from the ground

One of the sprinkler heads to your sprinkler system can break so it doesn't come up out of the ground anymore. This can cause a puddle of water to pool around the sprinkler head each time that the sprinklers come on. Since that area around the broken sprinkler head will get a puddle around it, this can create problems with your grass dying and with you finding an infestation of mosquitoes in the yard. Sometimes you can see right where the sprinkler head is broken and other times the break may be further underground where it isn't visible.

Sprinkler heads can get dirty

Since the sprinkler heads are located in your yard where they are surrounded by dirt, grass and other debris, it can be easy for debris to get in the sprinkler heads. Also, hard water can cause calcium build-ups to occur inside of the showerheads. When this happens, you may notice the water spraying in an odd manner, so the sprinklers aren't watering the exact areas they are supposed to. In some cases, the water will also spray in areas where you definitely don't want the water to go. When this problem happens, you will want to have the sprinkler heads cleaned.

The sprinklers suffer from low water pressure

If you notice that your sprinklers suddenly don't have the water pressure that they used to and that you need them to have, then there is something going on somewhere that has caused the water pressure to suddenly drop. Some of the things that can be causing the change in the water pressure n the sprinkler system include a broken pipe somewhere a long the system, a leaking pipe, a pipe that has somehow been damaged by something like a tree root, or something else that is preventing the normal flow of water.
