Use Vegetation To Help Control Erosion
ShareIf you have an area on your property that appears to be eroding and you are worried about the damage that erosion can cause, there are things that you can do to help control the erosion. One of those things is to start putting some kind of vegetation down. That vegetation will start spreading its root system out which will then start to anchor in the topsoil and then help to control the erosion. The roots can also help to absorb water that might otherwise cause a washout. There are a variety of things that you can plant which will help to control erosion.
Ground Cover
Ground covering plants tend to be plants that are low to the ground and which grow pretty quickly. That fact allows them to start anchor down the topsoil faster. The nice thing about ground cover is that there is a wide variety of plants that count as ground cover. That means that you are going to be able to find something that you like and that is native to your area. You could even go with something like sage or thyme, which are not only pretty, grow quickly, but they also smell really good when you step on them. If you are going to plant various kinds of vegetation, you may want to go to in stages, and ground cover can be a good first stage.
Grasses
Once you have planted the ground cover and it has started to establish itself, you can start in on the next stage and start planting some grasses. Grasses tend to have a deeper root system and will help to hold down everything better, especially when it's working in concert with ground cover. You don't have to pull the ground cover in order to plant the grass, since the grass can and will just grow in and around the ground cover, and can eventually start to self-seed and spread, especially if you don't mow it for a while.
Bushes and Trees
The final stage of your erosion control planting plan can include bushes and trees. They will have the deepest roots and will really tie the topsoil into the lower layers of soil and help to break off any water runoff. You are going to want to wait until you have some established grass before you plant these things because it will take longer for them to establish themselves and their root systems.
Erosion can be a real problem. Not only are you looking at the loss of topsoil, but it can also leave hills at risk of mudslides or other issues. Planting different kinds of vegetation can help with that problem. Contact a service, like Bark Blowers & Hydroseeding Inc, for more help.
