Removed Two Trees And Stumps From Your Yard? 5 Tips To Get Your Yard Back To Normal
ShareIf you had to remove two trees, this can cause damage to your yard. Not only do you remove the tree, but the stump is ground down. You are then left with a hole where the tree was. Because you had two trees cut this will make your yard look even worse. Fortunately, there are things you can do to get your yard back to normal again, five of which are listed below.
Gather Together Items You Need
Purchase topsoil at a garden center. Along with the topsoil, purchase some compost. Mix approximately three to four inches of compost into the topsoil. The compost is an organic material that provides nutrients for your grass seeds. Having fertile and nutritious topsoil will give your grass seeds their best chance of growing quick and healthy. If you are not sure the amount of topsoil you need, measure the circumference of the hole, as well as how deep the hole is. Give this information to the garden center and they can help you choose the right amount.
Along with topsoil, you will need a rake to clear away debris, such as leftover wood shavings. When purchasing grass seed, make sure you plant the same type of grass that you already have. If you are not sure what type you have, take a sample of the grass with you to the garden center, or ask a landscape contractor.
Add Soil
Fill each hole with the soil and compost mixture. You need to ensure the topsoil is level with the hole so the grass you plant will grow evenly with the grass already planted. Use a rake to loosen soil that is clumped. When finished, use the rake to even the soil.
Make the Spread
You will apply the grass seed manually with your hand. Because of this, you need to make the spread before you start planting. This means putting an indentation into the soil for the seeds to be planted in. You can use your rake for this, or use a spreading tool, which can be purchased at a garden center. Space out the spreads about half an inch apart and go into a criss-cross pattern.
Plant the Seeds
Once the spread is finished, generously disperse the seeds. You do not need to be careful when doing this, as you want a lot of seed so the entire area will be covered with grass once it starts to grow.
Use a rake to rake the seeds into the topsoil. Add a quarter-inch of top soil over the seeds. When finished, water the area until the soil is moist to an inch deep. You can know this by sticking your finger into the soil about one inch.
Maintain the Seeds
The seeds need to stay moist until the grass reaches approximately two inches. As long as you get about one inch of rain per week this should be enough. If you do not get this rain the water the seeds yourself. Use a fine mist to water the seeds as if you do not you will wash the seeds away.
Talk with a landscape contractor if you need help doing any of this. For more information, contact a company like Esposito's Landscaping & Lawn Care.
