Your sprinklers are a key part of your landscape design since they are the system that provides regular water to your lawn and other plants. However, just like all other parts of your landscape that are exposed to the elements, your sprinkler system can deteriorate over time. An improperly functioning or broken sprinkler system can quickly cause all sorts of other issues for your landscape and yard. Being able to spot signs of a struggling sprinkler system can help you figure out when to call a landscaping contractor for repairs.

Muddy and Swampy Areas

If you notice that there are areas of your yard that have a significant amount of standing water, or have simply become muddy and swampy, you likely need to have your sprinkler system repaired. Most commonly, these muddy areas are caused by sprinkler heads that are not shutting off properly after your sprinkler system has turned off, which you may be able to spot by looking for leaking water out of the heads. In other, more serious cases, however, swampy areas of your yard that are not right around sprinkler heads can point to a broken or leaking pipe underground, which will need to be replaced.

Increased Water Bills

In a somewhat related train of thought to the above point, if your sprinkler system is leaking water at any point, either at the sprinkler heads or in a broken pipe underground, you will likely see that reflected in your monthly water bills. This can be a little harder to spot, since your water usage may fluctuate significantly throughout the year, but if it seems to you that your water bills have significantly increased without a corresponding increase in the amount of water usage in your home, you may want to talk to a landscaping professional about inspecting your sprinkler system.

Brown Grass

Another sure sign that your sprinklers are not in the best condition is if you can spot signs of dead or drying up grass throughout your yard. This can occur due to damaged or blocked sprinkler heads that are no longer able to spray water over the entire area of your yard: those heads will likely need to be replaced, which is relatively simple. In other cases, however, this can be because of reduced water pressure in your sprinkler system.  Reduced water pressure can be caused by a whole host of issues, from leaks to clogged pipes and other similar problems, so a professional inspection is likely the best route to take.
