How To Better Care for a Lawn That Always Seems Dry
ShareDoes your lawn always seem dry, even though you water it? Your first instinct may be to just water it more often. That's not necessarily the wrong answer, but it's also not a complete answer. If your lawn always seems dry, there are a few ways you can take better care of it.
Water earlier in the day
You can dump gallons and gallons of water on a lawn, but if you are watering too late in the day, a lot of that water may just be going to waste. It may be evaporating from the surface before it has a chance to seep down into the soil where the roots are located. So, if your lawn is extra dry, try watering earlier in the morning. Water before the sun comes up or just as it is coming up. If your mornings are too busy for watering, you can water later at night as the sun is going down.
Let your grass grow a little longer
If your lawn is dry but your grass is short, the soil won't be protected. More water will evaporate from the soil before the grass has a chance to use it. Shorter grass also tends to be weaker, so it may dry out too easily and look overly dull and brown. Try skipping a few mowing sessions, and then when you start mowing again, move the mower blades up a setting or two. Leaving the lawn a few inches long will help keep it more moist.
Aerate the lawn
Aeration is a process by which lots of tiny holes are made on the surface of your lawn. This helps the water better penetrate into the deeper layers of your soil. You can have a lawn care company come aerate the soil once a year. They generally use a large, driveable piece of equipment to do this. There are also smaller, hand-push aerators that you can buy at most home and garden stores. These do a good job, although it may take you a few hours to aerate a larger yard.
If your lawn is dry, watering it more is just the first step. You should also make sure you are watering in the early morning or evening. Then, leave your lawn a bit longer, and aerate your soil. Your lawn will be looking more lush and moist before you know it.
